T.S. Eliot Prizewinner to read at dlr Poetry Now 2010
At dlr Poetry Now, we're gearing up for a great festival weekend from March 25th to 28th, and we're also currently celebrating the news that Philip Gross, who is among the poets reading at dlr Poetry Now 2010, has won the T.S. Eliot Prize, the UK's most prestigious prize for poetry, for his collection The Water Table (Bloodaxe).
Poet Simon Armitage, who chaired the judging panel, praised Philip for a "concentrated and keen-eyed and patient" collection, and for his "real lyrical confidence". The Water Table turned out to have an unintended topicality when it came out late last year; with flooding everywhere in the news, these poems exploring the dangers as well as the wonders of water seemed eerily prescient. We'll look forward to hearing them from Philip when he reads at dlr Poetry Now on Friday, March 26th at 6.30pm. Philip is acclaimed, too, as a writer of poetry for children, and we're delighted to say that he will also lead this year's Children's Reading, which will be attended by schoolchildren involved in the Poetry Now Education Programme on Friday March 26th at 10am.
