Glenhordial Farm and Permaculture

In August 2009 Marella attended a ten day permaculture design course in Cloghjordan in Tipperary. Using the the knowledge she gained here, and her own extensive horticultural organic experience and qualifications Glenhordial Farm just outside Omagh has embarked on an extensive retrofit of permaculture principles to all of its daily activities.
Marella along with her husband Billy ran a small back packing hostel at the farm for eighteen years .The hostel was closed at the end of October 2009 and the hostel building is now being used to roll out all sorts of organic gardening and sustainable lifestyle courses along with permaculture courses in the future.
Marella will be attending a Permaculture teachers course in Wales at the start of February and hopes to start projects for her diploma early in 2010.
Indeed the first permaculture project is already under way as they managed to plant over 25 native fruit trees in late November to start their new forest garden project.

Wishing for Spring

Relaxing by the fire in the sitting room looking out at the snow and wishing for Spring . Nothing to do except to browse through all the wonderful seed catalogues and order what I need for the new growing season.
Descriptions such as "Really Red Deer Tongue" which is a kind of open head lettuce or Minnesota midget melon makes me wonder what are people on when it comes to naming plants! Blue bananas is a type of winter squash whilst Precoca de Louviers is a spring cabbage. These varieties all come from The Real Seed Catalogue .This is a family concern that has collected , the best seeds from the best seeds over the years. All their varieties are open-pollinated (non-hybrid) so that means I can save the seed myself for the future from what I grow. You can get a catalogue here www.realseeds.co.uk
